Rhapsody for flute, clarinet, and piano (2019)

Parhelion (1).jpg

This music is dedicated to the Parhelion Trio:  Sarah Carrier, Ashleé Miller, and Andrea Christie.  Collaborating with these exciting musicians was the kind of experience every composer lives for. The recording is from a live performance at the Union Temple of Brooklyn, part of the “An Die Musik” concert series, on February 23, 2020.

The Rhapsody takes a musical journey through many moods.  To begin, members of the trio introduce themselves through a series of dramatic cadenzas, then the music settles into a brooding duet, in which the voices of the flute and clarinet intertwine.  The mood brightens into a playful, mischievous tarantella, which then turns into a menacing, sarcastic march.  After an attempt to shrug off the menace, the music drifts into a nostalgic waltz, wistfully looking back to earlier moments in the rhapsody before stirring itself into a brief, rousing coda.

The music is a reworking of my “Fantasy II,” originally composed in 2011 for flute and accordion.
